Caithness has a number of local Galas, Shows and Highland Games. These mini festivals bring together a variety of local entertainment for local people to enjoy. These are usually low key affairs and aim to help every one especially children have an enjoyable day or week. The highlight of several of the Galas is a parade of decorated floats which in Caithness in recent years often take the form of representing a local event, TV programme or other incident. In fact it can be almost anything. Wick and Thurso Galas are the biggest in the county. Caithness has four highland Games each year with Halkirk being one of the biggest in the highlands and growing in recent years.
At the Galas the opportunity is often taken to poke fun at officials, committees or decisions taken by councils or individuals that have hit the headlines. In fact almost anything is fair game for the Caithness sense of humour on these occasions.
Most of the events are followed by dances in tents or local hotels. The local galas have a few days or even a week of other events especially for children but also other age groups and their are usually programmes of events in local shops and on this web site as they are published.
Increasingly school reunions are being held in the Wick and Thurso gala weeks swelling the numbers of people coming into the county to meet old friends and see relatives.
