| Description: |
For some, the Crask is
too wild and remote.
An
early 19th Century
travellers' inn, we are
12 miles north of Lairg
on the tongue road.
Beyond the
surrounding
expanse of flow country
are fine 3000 foot
hills. There is little
else.
We are a small, fully
licenced hotel,
comprising 3 en-suite
bedrooms, public bar,
lounge and dining
room.
There is no TV but we
do
have a diverse library
and grand piano. Peat
burning stoves
supplement the central
heating.
A rural 19th Century inn
had to be largely self
sufficient and to a
degree this is still the
case. For instance, the
garden, croft land and
hill grazings combine
to
provide much of the
food
for the table. Highland
beef, hill lamb and
venison are frequently
on the menu, plus
other
game in season.
Wholesome soups
and
puddings help satisfy
our many energetic
guests.
Energy is commonly
expended on hill
walking, cycling and
trekking to the
numerous
hill lochs to fish for
the wild brown trout,
also perhaps to help,
along with the friendly
collies, gather the
sheep in preparation
for
one of the seasonal
operations.
For the general
motorist, we are central
for excursions to all
parts of Sutherland.
Some come just for a
spot of Astronomy. The
Crask is possibly
unsurpassed in Britain
for a combination of
large, open sky and
absence of light
pollution.
The only other dwelling
at Crask is our cottage,
which acts as a 12 bed
self-catering
bunkhouse.
Children and pets are
welcome and we are
open
all year.
