There are grander cathedrals than Dornoch, but few so immediately captivate the human soul. The red sandstone building exudes life and love. Dornoch is the old 'capital' of Sutherland and this Royal burgh has been the religious and administrative centre of Sutherland for 800 years.

Dornoch is a world-renowned golfing venue. The Royal Dornoch Golf Course, designed by Old Tom Morris from St Andrews, is synonymous with some of the most famous names in the game: Harry Vardon, Bobby Locke and Bobby Jones, Nick Faldo, Greg Watson and Tom Watson.

Multi-millionaire philanthropist Andrew Carnegie was introduced to golf at Royal Dornoch. He had a 'holiday home' nearby, Skibo Castle, now an exclusive 'retreat' for the rich (very) and famous. The magnate presented the Carnegie Shield to the club, said to be one of the most beautiful golf trophies in the world.

As beautiful is the Scottish Wildlife Trust nature reserve at Mound (a causeway across Loch Fleet designed by Thomas Telford) north of Dornoch; home to a wide variety of both resident and visiting birds. The little river here attracts salmon, and a pass was built into the Mound to allow them access.

From Embo in the north, south and west along the shores of the Dornoch Firth to Spinningdale, the flora and fauna is outstanding and offers a lifetimes pleasure. The Dornoch Firth Bridge, opened by HM Queen Mum, crosses the shallow waters to reach Edderton in the east and the attractive holiday resort of Portmahomach at the end of the B9165.
