The only way to discover this hidden land is on foot. The A835 Ullapool/Dingwall route borders its southern edge and this is the only road. To the north lies a mountain wilderness of rocky streams and secret glens. To explore here you must be fit, well prepared and love the hills.
There are three principal deer forests, Inverlael to the south, Rhidorrach to the north and Freevater Forest to the east. Within their bounds tower dramatic peaks, Beinn Dearg (3547ft), Seana Bhraigh (3040ft), Meall nam Bradhan (2221ft) and Car Ban (2762ft).
Stalker's tracks quarter some of this landscape, following river courses or striking steeply up to the high tops, and you should always seek advice from the estate keepers about where to hike, particularly during the deer shooting season, before setting out. Also always make sure that you let somebody know where you are heading and when you expect to return.
You will almost certainly be alone with your thoughts all day, accompanied only by eagle, buzzard and peregrine; observed by only statuesque stags or curious otter. If you love the wild nature of Scotland, its flora and fauna and ever-changing skies, you need to go here, now.
