Ullapool in Wester Ross is one of the most welcoming and busy towns in the West Highlands. It was founded in 1788 by the British Fisheries Association to exploit the shoals of herring that gathered around Loch Broom and, to the south, in Little Loch Broom.
Today, Ullapool has a cosmopolitan air that is immediately inviting. The harbour front with its attractive shops bustles with visitors from all over the world during summer months. Several languages may be heard along the quayside, as well as English and Gaelic.
Ardmair Bay to the north of the town has an excellent caravan site were boats may be hired for sea fishing expeditions. Less strenuous pleasure may be found in Ullapool Museum, a superb exhibition and record of times past and not so past in this magical area.
Three miles south from Ullapool by the shores of Loch Broom is Leckmelm Gardens. The great house built here by Sir John Fowler has now gone, but the gardens he planted were restored in 1985. They contain wonderful trees, including several varieties of maple, eucalyptus, oak, pine and Douglas fir.
But the real jewels here are the mountains of An Teallach (3,484ft), climbed from Dundonnell on the shores of Little Loch Broom in the Strathnasheallag Forest. They will reward your effort with one of the most unforgettable views in all of Scotland. An everlasting treasure.
