Lairg lies at the centre of this area, dominated by a Hydroelectric dam that restrains the waters of Loch Shin. The loch, one of the longest in Scotland, is 17 miles in length by up to one mile wide and is a popular trout fishery.
The principal Loch Shin feeder stream, the River Tirry, has been tamed of much of its flow by thirsty commercial forestry plantations, but after heavy rain this little river is very lovely and the perfect place for a lazy family picnic.
As dramatic are Shin Falls to the south of Lairg. Steps lead down from the Visitor Centre by the B864 road to the head of a deep, dark pool. From out of the peat-stained foam at the base of the falls, salmon leap upstream; wonderful bars of silver and gold, instinctively challenging the flow to reach their primal spawning grounds.
Lairg is essentially an easy going crofting community, but it admirably hosts Europe's biggest single-day lamb sale when up to 70,000 animals may be sold. Buyers come from all over the world for the sale. Lairg is then at its brightest and busiest.
The town is also a natural 'jumping off' point for travellers heading further north and west into the remote airts of Sutherland and Wester Ross; along tortuous single-track roads that have to be negotiated with care and caution. Hasten slowly to fully appreciate the special nature of this ancient landscape.
