The Inverpolly National Nature Reserve is the heart of this most remarkable of highland landscape. Sandstone mountains, Ben Mor Coigach, Stack Polly, Cul Beag and Cul Mor Beag tower above purple moorlands splashed with trout-filled lochs. Loch Sionascaig, the largest and deepest, wanders round a crooked shoreline 17 miles in length.
The crofting township of Achiltibuie overlooks the 'Summer Isles', Tanera Mor, Eilean Fada Mor, Tanera Beg and Eilean a'char. Seals populate the rocky shoreline that borders the road north through Polbain, Altandhu and Reiff to the wilderness of the Rubha Mor peninsula.
At Brae of Achnahaird a convenient caravan site nestles on the greensward plain above yellow sands. Two further, glorious, secret little bays, approached along the west bank of the Garvie River, lie to the north: Garvie and Lag na Saille.
Mighty Ben Mor Coigach dominates the southern view and may be climbed from near Culnacraig. The vista from the summit is breathtaking, encompassing some of the most dramatic peaks in the north.
Coigach and Achiltibuie are well served with accommodation for visitors, from the splendid Summer Isles Hotel to a wide range of excellent self-catering cottages. But you must book early. Those who have discovered this 'special' area return year after year. Go there and you will find out why they do so.
