This is the heart of the Reay Forest, for century's the home of Clan Mackay, now in the ownership of Westminster Estates. The grey shoulder of Arkle (2584ft), the hill of the level top, towers above the ragged shoreline of Loch Stack where an excellent stalker's path give easy access to two adjacent hills, Meall Horn (2548ft), the hill of the eagle, and Sabhal Beg (2393ft), the hill of the little barn.

The track begins at Lone on the north shore of Loch Stack and winds eastwards through the hills for a distance of nine miles, past Gobernuisgach Lodge into green Strathmore. This path is known locally as the 'Burma Road'. After the 2nd World War it was widened and improved and those who carried out this tortuous task christened the new way after its infamous Far Eastern namesake.

Other stalker's paths may also be used to explore this remarkable landscape. Park at the shepherd's hut by the side of the A838 road at the west end of Loch Stack. Follow the steep track up and over the northern skirts of graceful Ben Stack (2364ft).

This route leads south to Duartmore through a maze of trout-filled lochs and lochans, peopled by tail bobbing wheatear, chorused by the plaintive cry of greenshank and golden plover. These routes are ideal for little legs and for all degrees of fitness. Magnificent views, solitude and absolute peace will reward your effort.
