The A838 road links the communities of Melvich in the east and Bettyhill to the west. Yellow sand beaches at Melvich, Armadale and Farr beckon the bucket-and-spade brigade and this area has some of the finest wild brown trout fishing in the north.

The township of Bettyhill is named, not after Elizabeth, Countess Duchess of Sutherland, but after an old woman called 'Betty' who lived in a house on the hill. Earlier inhabitants had homes here on the raised beach at the mouth of the River Naver. The outlines of the hut circles Neolithic people built 5,000 years ago are clearly visible.

Visit Farr church, a museum telling the story of Clan Mackay. Clan Mackay were founder members of one of the Britain's most famous regiments, the 93rd Sutherland Highlanders who formed the 'thin red line' at the Battle of Balaclava in 1854. The regiment was raised in Strathnaver where a graceful roadside monument commemorates this event.

High above Invernaver beach, on a rocky crest, are the remains of a broch, defensive towers built 2,000 years ago. From the broch, explore the Invernaver national nature reserve, a golden treasury of unique wildflowers. Higher still, beyond the reserve, rear the mighty mountains of North Sutherland: Ben Loyal and Ben Hope and, lining the western horizon, a distant glimpse of Arkle and Foinaven.
