Mainland Scotland's most northerly golf course overlooks the golden sands of Balnakeil Bay at Durness. This is a 9-hole affair and the 9th/18th hole is challenging, a seven iron-shot across the Atlantic. Players hit their ball, or try to, over a wide 'geo', a sea-swept inlet, onto the terraced green by the clubhouse.

The most remarkable aspect of this landscape is the impact of the limestone outcrop that surfaces here. It encourages the growth of amazing wild flowers; including mountain everlasting, mountain aven, grass of Parnasus and a wide variety of rare orchids.

A ferry over the narrow waters of the Kyle of Durness connects with a bus that tracks the road out to Cape Wrath Lighthouse. Further adventure may be found exploring the dramatic Smoo Caves to the east of Durness. Tramp Faraid Head in the spring over a carpet of wildflowers to say hello to firework-beaked puffins that nest on the cliffs.

End your day with a visit to mainland Scotland's most northerly bookshop, the Loch Croispol Bookshop and Restaurant in Balnakeil Craft Village. Call at Lotte Globb's workshop. Lotte is an internationally renowned ceramicist who produces unique, unforgettable images.

Best of all, if you are a trout angler, fish the marvellous Durness Limestone lochs, courtesy of the Cape Wrath Hotel: Caladail, Borralie, Croispol and Loch Lanlish. They are the finest trout lochs in Europe. Your only problem in this remarkable corner of North West Sutherland will be finding the willpower to leave.
